  The Divan-i-Hafiz
By : Hafez Shirazi

The persian poet Hafez was considered to be butt-ugly by the towns people of Shiraz in the 14th century. This reputation didn't stop him from reaching to the heights of all beauty -both in the mundane world and beyond. His poetry has stupmed translators for many centuries. He has been misunderstood as an obsessive-compulsive mad man and common drunk. His verse is said to be the highest apex of poetry in Persia. His Divan is used as a daily guide and I-Ching of sorts as well as a spiritual guidance and inspiration. Many a soul has dedicated there entire lives to reading and understanding Hafez. Meher Baba said you could actually become God-Realized while reading the poetry of Hafez. Hafez did indeed know a thing or two about beauty.

ARISE, oh Cup-bearer, rise! and bring
To lips that are thirsting the bowl they praise,
For it seemed that love was an easy thing,
But my feet have fallen on difficult ways.
I have prayed the wind o'er my heart to fling
The fragrance of musk in her hair that sleeps -
In the night of her hair - yet no fragrance stays
The tears of my heart's blood my sad heart weeps.
